Welcome to this website. The hope is for it to develop into a helpful resource for information on the challenges of electric metering. My plan, since retiring from Chapman Metering, is to continue serving the REC’s and Municipal Utilities in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Kansas by keeping the “Hands On” programs we have developed over the past 40 years active. Presentations to groups or even utility safety meetings on topics for metering pitfalls and safety in general can also be provided to any of you who may have an interest.

Our efforts here are to continue assisting you in setting up your metering maintenance programs, performing accuracy certification of your test equipment and volt meters, shop testing your removed meters as before, and providing training for your metering personnel. As many of you already know, teaching old dogs new tricks does not work well, and getting involved with texting is one of those tricks this “Old Dog” is simply not able to cope with. On-site assistance in familiarizing your techs with any new verification equipment can be arranged.

Today’s solid-state meters are seldom inaccurate, although compliance with the ANSII standards for test frequencies is still a part of our world, we need to remember that problems with the connections, and related equipment at the metering site, will never go away and can be responsible for far more “Line Loss” than might be expected. Developing a program for periodic inspections for transformer-rated metering locations using one of the latest circuit analyzing test sets available will definitely pay for itself. As we move forward here, we hope to add a few samples of revenue loss conditions discovered and corrected during some of these Energy Audits.
